Why you can't miss your IME

In a New York workers' compensation case, the IME is often a turning point. The carrier's doctor examines you and reports findings that the judge and the Workers' Compensation Board may rely on. Missing the exam — even unintentionally — can result in your benefits being suspended, your case being delayed, or issues being decided without your medical picture fully presented.

IME Reminders sends you push notifications 1 week, 1 day, and 2 hours before your exam, plus directions and a preparation checklist, so the appointment never slips by.

Common questions

What injured workers ask about IMEs.

What is an Independent Medical Examination (IME)?

An IME is a medical examination arranged by the workers' compensation insurance carrier to assess your injury and level of disability. A doctor selected by the carrier — not your treating physician — examines you and reports to the Workers' Compensation Board. Because those findings can significantly affect your benefits, it's important to be prepared and take the exam seriously.

What happens if I miss my IME appointment?

Missing an IME without a valid reason can have serious consequences — your benefits may be suspended, your case may be delayed, or a judge may decide issues based largely on the IME doctor's findings. Always notify the carrier and your attorney immediately if you cannot attend, and provide documentation when possible.

How long does an IME usually take?

Most IMEs last 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the complexity of your injury. The doctor takes your history, performs a physical exam, and may ask you to perform specific movements to assess function. Allow extra time for check-in paperwork and travel.

Can I bring an attorney or support person?

Policies vary by doctor. Many IME doctors do not allow an attorney in the exam room, but you may be able to bring a support person who waits in the reception area. Call ahead to confirm the doctor's policy. You are generally allowed to take notes about what occurs during the exam.

How should I behave during my IME?

Be honest, professional, and respectful. Describe your symptoms and limitations accurately — don't exaggerate or minimize. The IME doctor works for the carrier, so they are evaluating your claim objectively. Answer questions directly, and ask for clarification if you don't understand something.

Is IME Reminders really free?
